Your Computer May Be Killing You…Part 1

Or, maybe I should say that working on computers is a dangerous business. Procede at your own risk. Hmmm… that may seem a little extreme, but you will see my point as I go on.

As I write this on my sofa in my living room, I am multitasking watching MSNBC, writing this post, and keeping an eye on the little one.  Just to let you know how I am sitting: reclined (read slouching), head angled downward, shoulders rounded as I am typing,  and low back unsupported.

That probably sounds a little familiar to most of you reading and I have to say, its a pretty comfortable position for me at the time. So, what’s the problem? Read more…

Avoid the flu this season

With flu season upon us in the US, prevention should be kept in mind. I was reading over at Ecochildsplay and found this post on:

Top 10 Places in Your House that Harbor Germs:

  1. Refrigerator doors and handles
  2. Bathroom faucets
  3. Doorknobs
  4. Remote controls
  5. Light switches
  6. Telephones
  7. Dishwasher handles
  8. Salt and pepper shakers
  9. Toys

Now that you have the list, you’ll want to make an extra effort to clean and sanitize those areas regularly.

The remote control…hadn’t thought of that one.

  • Your hands!

    It really shouldn’t be painful…

I have been hearing and reading a lot about people’s visits to their physical therapist. America-going to PT shouldn’t be painful. It may be uncomfortable. But there is a difference.

Remember, you are going to therapy to get better. Not worse. If you do get worse, tell the therapist to back off. Sure, we can hope that “they know what they are doing”, but, you are the one living in pain until the next appointment when it will start all over again.

My rule of thumb for my victims is this: “if you are starting to hold your breath, then its too aggressive”. Or, if it hurts more than a few hours after you leave my office, then, its too aggressive.

Don’t let them beat you up! You’re there to get better!!!

    Muscles and pain

    Muscle pain

Most of what people feel as pain is caused by muscles or soft tissues. For many of us some or many of our muscles are weak, deconditioned or shortened. Because of this we end of up with poor posture and poor body mechanics.

It’s not the poor posture and poor body mechanics that cause the pain; however, it is the poor posture and or poor mechanics that keep the pain around. One of the best ways to get out of pain is to correct your posture and to learn how to move. So, if you want to get rid of your pain, you probably need to get rid or your poor posture and or poor body mechanics.

But how can you do that you ask? The only way to really improve your posture or improve the way your body moves is to stretch your muscles, and then to learn how to move correctly. But first things first. Read more…
