About
In my practice over the years, I have met a ton of good people. Some of them were pretty funny too. People from all walks of life and all lifestyles. The 6ft. 2in. 250lbs.+ paratransit driver to the 98lbs. flight attendant. Law enforcement, and those of a more questionable back ground. “I used to collect money for ‘people’”, was the answer one of my patients gave me when I asked him about his work history. People from all over who did everything imaginable.
However, there was one consistant theme that ran through all of it. That theme was that they liked coming to me to find out what was wrong with them. They always would say “I like the way you explain things to me. It makes a lot of sense.”
This blog is an attempt to share a little of what I learned.
Let me present a scenario to you for you to think about. I think you will get it.
You’re headed out of town for the weekend because you have to be at an appointment at 8:00am on Saturday morning. Its about a 4-5 hours drive but being friday and you have to get yourself together after work, you get a late start.
So, you are out on the interstate late on a friday night. While you are driving, it starts to rain as you remember what your mechanic told you: “if your engine gets wet, it might stop running”. You think to yourself “great”.
“I was going to go back and get that fixed but I just didn’t have time this week”, you say to yourself. It keeps raining. You keep driving.
Then, after 30 minutes more, sure enough, your car stops. You’re half way to your destination, late, on a rainy Friday night. What goes through your mind? Are you mad? Are you scared? Are you confused? Are you embarrassed? How exactly would you feel?
Well, let’s add a little more to the story. Let’s say that, even though your car broke down, you know why it broke down. Your mechanic friend explained your car’s problem in detail and you understand it. Now, how do you feel?
Let’s go a little further. Let’s say now you mechanic friend has explained it to you in detail and you know exactly what part you need. How do you feel now? Are you feeling a little better? Well, at least you know what to tell the tow truck guy when he gets there.
Let’s go a little further. Let’s say that you know what’s wrong, you have the part, and you know how to fix it. How do you feel now?
Do you see the progression? When someone has a problem, and they know what it is, and they know how to fix it, then that problem becomes just an inconvenience rather than an emergency. Sure, you have to go outside and get wet and maybe a little dirty and you might be a little late. But, you are able to take care of the problem yourself.
Its like that with your body. If you are having problems with it, the thing that seems to help the most is knowing what’s wrong and knowing what to do about it.
This blog will be an attempt to share with you my thoughts on some of what I have run across in my practice. And, how people got a little dirty, and get rained on while they fixed their mobility. Enjoy.
